Why garden needs a bumblebee nesting pot

Bumblebees play a crucial role in the garden, making a significant contribution to organic gardening. These industrious insects are even more efficient than honey bees, collecting more pollen per day during their nectar-gathering flights. Unfortunately, finding a suitable nesting site has become increasingly challenging for these peaceful creatures.

A bumblebee pot is designed specifically for above-ground nesting bumblebee species, particularly those that create nests in long grass. Interestingly, bumblebees are drawn to the colour blue, making the blue entrance of the pot especially appealing to them. This innovative solution provides a safe and attractive nesting option for these important pollinators.

Selecting the perfect location for your bumblebee house is crucial. It should be placed in a sunny area that is shielded from heavy rain, but not in direct sunlight. Ideally, the bumblebee pot should be warmed by the morning sun and shaded for the remainder of the day. The entrance hole should face east, and it is recommended to plant bee-friendly flowers nearby to attract the bumblebees.

Old mouse nests or material from a pet rodent can serve as excellent nesting material for bumblebees due to the appealing scent it emits. However, for those who do not have access to such materials, moss can be a suitable alternative. A good layer at the base of the pot should suffice, as there is no need to completely fill it. Unlike honey bees, bumblebees are known to be messy nesters. It is recommended to replace the nesting material annually during winter and clean the pot with warm water. This maintenance should be completed before February, as this is when the queens begin searching for nesting sites once again.
