If you thought bees, then think again and read on!
By Scott J Millin
Dandelions are a common UK wildflower. While they may be considered a nuisance by some, they play a critical role in the ecosystem as a food source for many creatures. They are also suitable for human consumption.
However, contrary to belief, dandelions are not the first food for bees. They are a second-rate flower where bees are concerned. Recent studies have shown that dandelions lack certain amino acids that are essential for the health of bees. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, which are crucial for the growth and development of bees.
You might be surprised to learn that many beetles serve as important pollinators. Flower beetles often use dandelions as a food source, such as the beautiful metallic green thick-legged flower beetle pictured above. They get the name from the males with distinctive swollen hind legs used as a vice-grip when mating.
So next time you see a dandelion growing out of a crack in some pathing, think twice before removing it.
