Moths and butterflies are similar in appearance and behavior but differ slightly in their habitat preferences. Moths tend to prefer plants with light-coloured flowers. In contrast, butterflies feed during the day and seek brightly coloured flowers like coneflowers. Additionally, moths have fewer predators than butterflies due to their ability to camouflage themselves on tree bark or within vegetation. For these reasons, it’s not uncommon for gardeners to encounter far more moths than butterflies when exploring outdoor spaces. Moths are a main food source for bats. However, both of these fascinating insects play crucial roles in pollination and should be valued equally in any ecosystem.
