Angle shades moth caterpillar
Phlogophora meticulosa
Conservation status: Common
When to see: May to October
About
The caterpillars of the angle shades moth are chunky and typically green or brownish in colour, with faint stripes on each segment. The larvae hatch in the autumn, overwinter as caterpillars, and then pupate in the soil the following spring, ultimately producing the first generation of adults for that year. These caterpillars are known to feed on a wide range of plants, including dock and stinging nettles. The angle shades moth is a common sight in parks, gardens, scrub, and along woodland edges, and hedgerows.
