Box-headed blood bee
Sphecodes monilicornis
Conservation status: Common
When to see: March to September
About
Box-headed blood bees are medium-sized black bees with red abdomens. They exhibit a cleptoparasitic behaviour, targeting various Furrow bee species. The females of these bees forcefully infiltrate pre-stocked nest cells, eliminating the resident egg or grub, and subsequently substituting it with their own offspring before sealing the cell once again.
