Cinnabar moth

A beautiful cinnabar moth perched on my pond reed.

Cinnabar moth
Tyria jacobaeae

Conservation status: Common

When to see: May to July

About

The cinnabar moth derives its name from the distinct colouration of its wings. While there is minimal variation in its appearance, there have been rare instances where the pinkish markings are substituted with yellow, or the forewing is red with a black border, or the wings are entirely black. This species is easily disturbed during the day and is known to fly in both daytime and after dark.
