About
Red foxes are one of the most widely distributed carnivorous mammals in the UK. These adaptable and skilled predators are known for their distinctive reddish-orange fur, long bushy tail, pointed ears, and black legs that make them easily recognizable. They have keen senses of smell, sight, and hearing which makes them excellent hunters, able to detect prey such as rodents and rabbits from great distances. Despite their cunning personalities, red foxes can also be quite playful and social creatures when not hunting for food. They often live in family groups called “skulks,” with a dominant male and female responsible for maintaining order within the group. Red foxes are prevalent throughout North America and Europe but have been introduced to other regions where they can thrive, making them an iconic species renowned for their intelligence, tenacity, and adaptability.
