About
So, you may have seen these little guys scampering around your local park or even in your own back garden – it’s the UK grey squirrel! These creatures are often considered a nuisance due to their destructive behaviour towards native tree species, but there’s no denying they’re cute. The grey squirrel is known for its bushy tail and sleek grey fur, with white underbelly and patchy reddish-brown colouring on its legs and head. They typically weigh between 1-2 pounds and measure about 18-20 inches from nose to tail. While they’re not native to the United Kingdom (having been introduced in the late 19th century), they’ve become a common sight in urban and suburban areas throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Keep an eye out next time you’re out for a walk – you might just catch a glimpse of one of these adorable creatures! They stash 100s of nuts in autumn to see them through the winter, and where those that are forgotten about, tree saplings might pop up.
