About
The hornet mimic hoverfly, the largest hoverfly species in the UK, measures almost 2 cm long. As its name implies, it is a remarkable mimic of the hornet, but it is harmless and poses no threat to humans. Once a rare sight in the UK until the 1940s, but in recent years this migratory species has become increasingly common in Southern England and is slowly spreading northwards, as it is benefitting from climate change. Interestingly, the larvae reside within wasp nests in which it swaps protection for nest-cleaning duties.
