About
The Malacosoma neustria, commonly known as the lackey moth caterpillar, is a species of caterpillar found in various parts of Europe, and southern parts of the UK. These caterpillars are easily recognisable due to their unique hairy bodies and striking colours, which range from blue, orange, white, to brown. Caterpillars feed under webbing on broadleaved trees and shrubs including Hawthorn, and in high numbers, they can potentially defoliate entire branches. However, the damage caused by these caterpillars is typically not severe, and they play a crucial role in supporting the biodiversity of a healthy garden.
