About
The large white butterfly, or cabbage white, is commonly seen in gardens, allotments, and farmland. This butterfly is easily recognisable by its large size and striking white colouration accentuated by prominent black tips on its forewings. The underside of its wings is a creamy colour. The caterpillars feed on cabbage and other brassicas, as the Latin name Pieris brassicae suggests. Adults fly between April and October, slowly gliding over cabbage patches and other brassicas. The female has two black spots and a dash on each forewing, while the male does not have the black spots. As its name suggests, the large white is much larger than other white butterflies.
