About

The small tortoiseshell butterfly is a charming medium-sized insect that often flutters around gardens, especially where buddleia flowers appear. This species is active throughout the year, with two or three broods and the ability to overwinter as an adult. The caterpillars of this butterfly feed on common nettle. Male small tortoiseshells are known for their aggressive territorial behaviour, often chasing after other butterflies and anything else that invades their territory. Interestingly they engage in courtship rituals by drumming their antennae on the hindwings of females. Look for the vibrant ring of blue spots around the edge of the wings to help identify them from other red, orange and black butterflies.
