About
The straw dot moth (Rivula sericealis) is a small but fascinating species found in southern Britain, scarcer further north and a suspected immigrant. It is commonly known for its distinct straw-coloured appearance, which makes it easily distinguishable from other moths. The adult moth typically has a wingspan of around 18-22 mm. Its name “straw dot” derives from the dark central mark on its wings resembling a straw or needlepoint dot. This nocturnal insect can be spotted across various habitats, including grasslands, gardens, and woodlands. Straw dot moths prefer feeding on plants such as docks. The larvae feed on various grasses.
